Overview
York Buildings required a sensitive lighting design approach that respected the Grade II listed fabric while introducing warmth, depth and flexibility for contemporary family living. The scheme was developed around the relationship between light, material and architectural detail, ensuring the restored cornicing, panelling, stair elements and period proportions were enhanced without the lighting feeling intrusive.
A layered lighting strategy was used throughout the house, combining concealed LED details, decorative wall lights, statement pendants and discreet architectural fittings. In the lower levels, warmer and more dramatic lighting creates a sense of intimacy, with linear LED details defining the staircase, vaulted spa area and sauna, while carefully positioned accent lighting brings texture and movement to the dark tiles, glass mosaics and rich wall finishes.
As the house rises through the floors, the lighting gradually softens to support a calmer, lighter atmosphere. Bedrooms, bathrooms and reception spaces were treated individually, with decorative fittings adding character and integrated lighting providing practical, comfortable light where needed. The result is a refined and highly considered lighting scheme that brings out the personality of each space while supporting the overall journey through the home.
