Original BTC
Original BTC was founded in 1990 by Peter Bowles in Oxfordshire. From the beginning, the vision was to celebrate British craftsmanship and timeless design. Breaking convention, Peter was the first to use bone china in lighting, creating the iconic Hector Table Light. This pioneering design quickly gained international recognition and set the foundation for the brand’s philosophy.
Commitment to local production led to further investments. In 2002, Original BTC acquired a Stoke-on-Trent bone china factory that was under threat of closure. The decision secured jobs, preserved skills, and ensured the continuation of traditional British ceramics in lighting. This factory remains central to the company today, producing hand-crafted shades with artistry and precision.
Expansion continued with the acquisition of Davey Lighting in 2010. With origins in nineteenth-century London shipyards, Davey Lighting is renowned for industrial design and outdoor fittings. By keeping production in the UK, Original BTC safeguarded the brand’s heritage while adapting classic models for modern spaces. In 2011, further acquisitions included English Antique Glass, the UK’s last flat glass manufacturer, and a Birmingham metalworks. These additions secured centuries-old techniques in glass and metal while supplying vital components for the growing collections.
Original BTC remains a family-run company. Peter’s son Charlie became Director in 2012 after years of hands-on experience. His sisters, Gina and Hettie, have also taken leadership roles, ensuring the business continues as a true family enterprise. In 2013, Original BTC acquired Beadlight, an LED lighting specialist recognised for innovation in aerospace and reading lights. This expansion reflected the company’s balance of heritage and modern technology.
Recognition has followed. In 2015, Original BTC received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. This honour highlighted the brand’s global growth and export success. Showrooms and teams now operate worldwide, but the company’s roots remain firmly in Oxfordshire.
Sustainability is also central to the company’s future. In 2021, glass-blowing operations were centralised in Oxfordshire to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This decision reflects the ongoing commitment to responsible production.
Original BTC stands today as a leader in British lighting. With a blend of craftsmanship, family values, and innovation, the brand continues to design and manufacture timeless luminaires for projects across the globe.
