Overview

West Side Common presented a unique opportunity to develop a lighting design scheme that supports the values of a certified EnerPHit retrofit while enhancing the beauty, comfort and functionality of a contemporary family home. Working within a project defined by sustainability, material sensitivity and exceptional environmental performance, the lighting was carefully considered to complement the architecture without compromising the home’s low-energy principles. The scheme was designed to feel warm, discreet and highly functional, using carefully selected fittings that align with the wider sustainable ethos of the project, including luminaires that can be returned for recycling, refurbishment or reuse at the end of their life.

The lighting strategy focuses on subtle layering, allowing the architecture and natural materials to remain at the centre of the design. Within the triple-height atrium, lighting helps emphasise the sense of openness and vertical volume, while drawing attention to the antique table and the soft curves of the hallway. Across the kitchen, dining and living spaces, integrated and architectural lighting enhances the tactile palette of oak, brass, cork, porcelain and black stained joinery, creating a calm, refined atmosphere by day and a more intimate, atmospheric setting by evening. Feature details, such as the bar, ceiling curves, exposed joists and fireplace alcove, are gently highlighted to add depth, warmth and visual interest without overpowering the interiors.

Throughout the home, the lighting design balances performance, comfort and environmental responsibility. Carefully controlled illumination supports everyday use, from practical task lighting in the kitchen to softer ambient lighting in the living spaces, bedrooms and bathrooms. The overall approach avoids unnecessary excess, instead using light precisely where it is needed to enhance texture, guide movement and shape the experience of the home. The result is a sensitive and sophisticated lighting scheme that supports West Side Common’s exceptional sustainability credentials while bringing warmth, elegance and atmosphere to every space.
